Department of Applied Mathematics was founded in 1963. From 1963 to 1988 it was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences Professor N. P. Fleishman. Since 1988 the Head of the Department is Doctor of Science, Professor, Distinguished Professor of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine Ya. H. Savula. The Department formed a scientific field of problems of mathematical and computer modeling and optimization of physical – mechanical fields in solid environment. This research area is based on the scientific achievements of professors N. P. Fleyshman and Ya. H. Savula and their students. The modern period of Departments functionality under Professor Ya. H. Savula direction studies characterized variation- projection methods, finite and boundary elements and their application to the analysis and optimal management of physical – mechanical fields. Scientific work is being held on the Department in the field of numerical modeling of solutions of applied problems of different nature from heterogeneous mathematical models and using hybrid schemes of finite and boundary elements methods, in the numerical analysis of nonlinear problems of mathematical physics with application to shell theory, the theory of plasticity and to modeling of transport processes plasma. Scientific researches are focused on their use in science, technology and use for modeling in ecology and medicine.

Students and teachers of the Department participate in international grants and projects.
The Department maintains contacts with the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, with Ukraine and foreign universities.

Research

Наукова робота кафедри ведеться у таких напрямках:

  • чисельне і комп’ютерне моделювання фізико-механічних процесів в суцільних середовищах;
  • оптимальне керування поведінкою системи, які описуються крайовими задачами математичної фізики;
  • чисельне моделювання процесів тепломасопереносу і дифузії, зокрема, для досліджень проблем екології;
  • розвиток теоретичних і прикладних аспектів застосування методів скінченних і граничних елементів;
  • розробка ідеології систем управління базами даних.

Тематика наукових досліджень членів кафедри:

  • Чисельне моделювання фізико-механічних полів у середовищах з малими неоднорідностями (проф. Я. Савула);
  • Розробка та комп’ютерна реалізація комбінованих схем методів скінченних та граничних елементів у прикладних задачах (доц. І. Дияк);
  • Застосування числових методів і комп’ютерного моделювання до розв’язування задач оптимального керування системами з розподільними параметрами (доц. К. Іванків);
  • Чисельне дослідження нелінійних процесів квазістатичного деформування тонкостінних складових тіл складної форми (доц. І. Муха);
  • Застосування числових методів і комп’ютерного моделювання до розв’язування задач оптимального керування системами з розподіленими параметрами (доц. М. Щербатий).

A successful performance by LNU Stallions in the 47th ICPC Finals

21.04.2024 | 21:15

Congratulations to the LNU Stallions faculty team,
comprised of graduate students Petro Tarnavskyi, Maksym Shcherba, and master’s student Yarema Styagar,
coached by associate professor Vasyl Biletskyi,
for their commendable performance in the final round of the 47th ICPC international student competition on April 18, 2024, in Luxor, Egypt.
Despite leading the competition after solving the fourth task and maintaining a position in the medal zone (1st-12th place) for a considerable duration, the team was unable to sustain their winning momentum towards the...

Fourth InterMaths Master’s defense!

02.06.2020 | 15:14

The quarantine conditions could not stop the defense. In the videoconference, the students had presented their works to the joint examination committee, including professors from both Lviv National University and the University of L’Aquila. This year four Ukrainian students receive both Ukrainian and Italian master degrees, so as four international students from Egypt, Nigeria, and Cameroon, who spent the last study year in Lviv.
