The Department of Theory of Optimal Processes was founded in 1973 within the framework of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.

The Department provides training students in bachelors degree in “system analysis” and masters degree in the specialty “system analysis and management”.

The heads of the department were: assoc. prof. Melnik Z.O. (1973-1975), prof. Bartish M.Ya. (1975-1986, 1991 – 2018), assoc. prof. Shcherbyna Yu.M. (1986-1991), prof. Shakhno S.M. (2018 – to this day).

For many years the department was and actually is a constant supplier of scientific and teaching staff in creating new departments both at the university and in other institutions. In 1975 the department was one of the basic ones in establishing the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics at Lviv University.

Under the scientific supervising of prof. M. Ya. Bartish  a scientific direction in the field of solving nonlinear functional equations and extremum problems was formed. On the basis of the developed general scheme of Newton-Kantorovich type methods for functional equations, new computational methods are investigated, in particular, for solving nonlinear equations with a non-differentiated operator, for solving nonlinear least squares problems. The research of methods of nonlinear programming, optimal control is carried out, various technical and economic problems are solved on the basis of optimization mathematical models.

According to the results of research, 2 doctoral theses (M. M. Prytula 1998, M. Ya. Bartish 2003) and 10 candidate’s theses were defended.

The teachers of the department train the general courses: “Methods of optimization”, “Numerical methods of linear algebra”, “Operations reseach”, “Theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics”, “Mathematical economics”, “Stochastic optimization”, “Financial mathematics”, “Computer graphics “,” Programming on the WEB “,” Decision-making in uncertainty “.

The Department maintain scientific contacts with departments and institutes of the corresponding profile at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, University  of Warsaw (Poland),  University of  Wroclaw (Poland),  University of Batumi (Georgia), University of Karlsruhe  (Germany), University of Innsbruck (Austria), Cameron University (Lawton, USA) and universities of other countries.
